The magazine-worthy recently renovated interiors and four suite-style bedrooms pair modern French style with South African artwork to chic, memorable effect.

Owned by a Hollywood event producer, the villa is well appointed to accommodate entertaining or private moments. Like a secret garden, a terrace made from reclaimed, century-old bricks is tucked behind the house, overlooking the canyon. Put your favourite music on the outdoor speakers and soak in the California sun from the lounge chairs, break for a swim in the pool, and fire up the barbecue before settling into the al-fresco dining area. On cooler evenings, move indoors and have a drink from the wet bar or wine fridge or relax in front of the Apple TV. If you need to stay connected, the house has an office space and Wi-Fi.

The villa combines the sprawling layout of a bungalow with the refinement of a mansion. Taking inspiration from the French modern aesthetic, Mediterranean style and the artwork of the owner’s native South Africa, the property feels at once contemporary and classic. The open-plan living spaces are unified by distressed Kentucky French oak floors, whitewashed ceiling beams and cool white walls, and wide windows that fill the rooms with light. A comfortable sitting area boasts cream-coloured sofas and built-in bookcases, a thoughtful touch that’s echoed by the built-in banquette in the dining area. The fully equipped kitchen has both a practical breakfast bar and an on-trend monochromatic white look.

Each of the villa’s four bedrooms has an en-suite bathroom. The master suite, which opens directly onto the pool terrace, has a king bed and walk-in closet. The other three bedrooms, one of which opens to the pool terrace as well, have queen beds. The same oak flooring and white walls create a serene feel in the bedrooms, while intricate tiles and unusual mirrors add interest to the spa-worthy bathrooms.

Though this Beverly Hills villa feels miles away from the ordinary, it’s a short drive to downtown, West Hollywood and more. Treat yourself to shopping on Rodeo Drive, about 4 miles away, or The Grove, about 6 miles away, or experience the famed nightlife along the Sunset Strip, just over 4 miles away, and Hollywood Boulevard, 6.5 miles away. If you’re travelling with kids, take them to Universal Studios, about 6 miles away, or for a day on Santa Monica Beach or Venice Beach, about 13 and 14 miles away, respectively. The closest airport to Sanctuary in the Hills is Los Angeles International, a 16-mile drive from the villa.
